The Devil Wears Black Mini Review

Hey guys,

Happy review Sunday!
Sorry today’s post is a little short. I have been meaning to post a review of this for a while, but I also have not really been enjoying my longer book review styled posts recently so I wanted to change it up and so I decided to go with this much shorter one for today while I figure out a better in between system that works for me. Hope you enjoy!
As always this is Spoiler Free.
I only recently got into L.J Shen’s writing and this is by far my favourite of hers yet, it’s also the least smutty if that’s something that impacts your picking up of a romance novel.
But enough rambling, let’s jump into the review.

Goodreads Description: ~
Maddie Goldbloom stitched up a plan to ensure everything in her life was perfect—from a career in fashion to a chic NYC apartment to a pediatrician boyfriend. When her ex, Chase Black, storms back into her life with an outrageous request, her immediate reaction is to refuse him. But he only wants to fulfill his father’s last wish. So even though he’s the man who broke her heart, playing his fiancée shouldn’t be hard, especially if it means she gets to watch the arrogant devil squirm a bit. What ensues is a chain of events that detonates Maddie’s life—and when Chase’s walls come down, they both are forced to face reality. They say keep your enemies close. But what if your enemy is also the man you love?

My Goodreads Review: *aka some of my thoughts whilst reading

March 10, 2021 – page 140
38.04% “I am in love with this book! Seriously, I’m half way through and there isn’t a single word I haven’t read and loved! I have a feeling this is going to be a new fave. The humour is off the charts and their blossoming friendship is too too sweet”

My Favourite Quote:

The devil didn’t have to drag me down to Hell. I had come with him willingly.

Review:
Can I rate something more than 5 stars? This is a freaking 20-star book. It has taken my heart and soul. It gave me the same feeling as when I watched the film About Time (one of my all-time favourite romance movies) even though the plots have very little – to basically no – overlap.
Usually, I say things I like and the things I didn’t like…but here there was nothing I didn’t like. Everything was WOW.
I cried with joy. – Chase and Mad are TOO cute for actual life!!
I cried with sadness. – This cleaved my heart in two in the best kind of way – I cried so much.
I cried with laughter – oh boy did I cry with laughter. This was off the charts funny. Like books have no business being this funny.
The plot was amazing and so well-paced. I adored the writing style and the Multi-POVs. And the text conversations and the letters were such amazing plot devices as well as carrying the plot and giving sweet meaning and parralells and all of the good writing crap that I learn about in Uni. The deleted text thing was so so so well done. I love when the reader knows but the characters don’t and just AHHH how else can I get across my new found addiction to this book.
I will be preaching about this for the rest of time – YOU NEED TO READ THIS!!

Overall Score = 9.5/10
Star Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐

That’s all for today’s review folks. I hope to work out the kinks of my new review system by either next week or the week after and I might make a post going over it if I think it needs one. As you can tell I loved this book. It had everything I wanted in it. Just such a feel good romance that also tugged on the heartstrings.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this and I will see you guys again tomorrow ❤
