The Kings of Kearny Review

Hey guys,

Happy review Sunday!
I hope your weekend has been good. The weather here is atrocious so it will probably another relaxed day inside for me.
As always this is a Spoiler Free review.
I was very kindly sent this book in exchange for an honest review via Netgalley. I have read from Navessa Allen before (Snowed In review) so I knew going into this that I already loved her writing style and boy did this not disappoint. It was my favourite read of April and I cannot recommend enough!
Let’s jump into the review.

Goodreads Description: ~
Jakob Larson is going to be the death of me.
That’s what I think every time he strides into my bar.
The Kings of Kearny run this small Texas town, and Jakob is their chief enforcer.
The Viking, they call him. He’s a criminal. As dangerous as he is sexy. The kind of man who makes my inner cavewoman sit up and take notice.
Him big. Make strong babies. Bring home mammoth for dinner.
I’m ready to indulge her desires, but just for one night. Unfortunately, Jakob has other plans. Someone in town is breaking one of the cardinal rules set by the leader of The Kings. And Jakob thinks they’re using my grandmother’s nursing home as a front for their illicit activities. Now I’m neck-deep in trouble with him, and every time I think I’ve figured out what’s really going on, Jakob reveals another piece of the puzzle.
I need to figure out how far I’m willing to go to protect this town. How far I’m willing to go with Jakob.
Because if I fall for him, there’s no going back. No hope for a peaceful ending.
But Jakob is the kind of man who makes me think that peaceful is overrated, and that descending into darkness with him could lead to something even better than a Happily Ever After.

My Goodreads Review: *aka some of my thoughts whilst reading

March 30, 2021 – 68%
“I am in love with this. I already knew I loved Navessa Allen’s writing, so this being awesome was no surprise.
But Krista – she blew me away. She is so badass. I am in love!”

My Favourite Quote:

There were too many amazing quotes to choose from but the one I settled on was actually the dedication because it just set up the kickassness of this book so well.

“For everyone who never believed in me…fuck you
(That’s it. That’s the dedication).”

Review:

WOW WOW WOW. I loved this. LOVED THIS!! Usually, I split my reviews into the things I liked and the things I didn’t like… but I can’t do that with this because I genuinely can’t think of anything bad about this book.

The writing – I have read Snowed In by Navessa Allen before so I already knew going into this that I was going to adore the writing style. This did not disappoint. I loved it, so beautifully written.

The plot – This book was hella dramatic!! In the best way! I adored every second, the two plots intertwined so well and I was gripped and intrigued every second. I struggled to put it down.

The characters – This is where this book really blew me away. I fell in love with Krista. She is easily one of the most badass female main characters I have ever read. I adored her. I loved her stubbornness and her drive and motivations. Her backstory was awesome! Her commitment to family was so adorable. And her internal thoughts were so funny and reminded me a lot of myself which was both a little worrying and also very awesome. She was beyond badass – she was so empowering to read and I adored it. I also loved that she was a chronic pain sufferer but also still awesome and not timid. Genuinely one of the best protagonists I have read from in ages.
I also loved Jakob. He was awesome. I loved his silent, broody, which could definitely kill your vibe. He is so not my typical book boy but sign me up for more of him pleaaasee.
I actually adored all of the secondary characters too – especially the women, because I swear this book only had amazing and empowering female characters, even the ones with small parts.

The pacing – The pacing was something else that was just amazing about this book. There was content from start to end. And I mean right to the end. Things were still happening on the final page. I’ve seen a few people not like that much because it is a little dramatic and abrupt but I think it works so well for what we know of these characters and I wouldn’t have ended it any other way.

The humour – Again, similar to the writing style – I knew Navessa Allen’s humour would have me in stitches and she delivered. I laughed a lot. I loved Jakob’s humour and how he irritated Krista. Their banter was perfection.

The romance – this was another perfect aspect of the book to me. It felt so real. Their actions as a couple were so accurate and believable. The pacing and the choices they made based on where they were in their relationship was just so good and I loved how it ended for them and how their story felt complete but still had a future if that makes any sense. It was just such an accurate and lifelike progression of a couple and I love it when authors make romances believable. Plus the spice…was hella spicy!!

So yeah, I really cannot recommend this enough. I will be shouting about this one from the rooftops for a while!

Overall Score = 9.5/10
Star Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

That’s all for today’s review folks. I adored this book and have a feeling I will be raving about this for ages because it was awesome! Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this and I will see you guys again tomorrow ❤
