First Lines Friday #6

Hi Guys!

Happy Friday! Today is my brother’s first day back at school. It’s odd he’s starting on a Friday ~~but I’m sure the school knows what it’s doing~~. I started reading The Scam List by Kurt Dinan last night and boy am I in love with it already! I would have probably read straight through the night if it didn’t have a killer migraine. Anyway, I have done this bookish meme a lot before (hence the 6 in the title haha) The last time I did it was in January so I thought it was about time I did it again! I had seen it on Sepia Reads Blog (who I love and you definitely should check out!) but I believe it was originally started by Wandering Worlds.

The sun sets in the west (just about everyone knows that), but Sunset Towers faced east. Strange!
Sunset Towers faced east and had no towers. This glittery, glassy apartment house stood alone on the Lake Michigan shore five stories high. Five empty stories high.

So? Are you intrigued? Would you guys read this book? Better yet, can you guess which book this is from? I reviewed this book this year. I really enjoyed it. I loved the writing style and I think you really get a sense of the personable and conversational style in these first few lines that really immerses you into the mystery of Sunset Towers. I want to hear what you thought of this opening line down below!

So this book is The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. Like I said, I reviewed this a couple of month’s ago and I really liked it. It is apparently a bit of a high school classic in America, and I can totally see why! It’s really well written and really gripping. And like I said above, the chatty writing style works so well because it lowers your guard and then bam! Things happen under your nose and you don’t even notice! Here is the blurb:

A bizarre chain of events begins when sixteen unlikely people gather for the reading of Samuel W. Westing’s will. And though no one knows why the eccentric, game-loving millionaire has chosen a virtual stranger—and a possible murderer—to inherit his vast fortune, one thing’s for sure: Sam Westing may be dead … but that won’t stop him from playing one last game!

So would you read this book? It’s a really short read of only 180 pages so I really recommend that you pick it up if you have a spare day. Anyway, that’s all from me for this week. I hope you enjoyed this and I hope to see you again on Monday 🙂
